Another rash of vehicle burglaries

Oak Park police are warning of car burglars hitting vehicles in south Oak Park recently. The vehicles were generally parked outside in the rear of residences. The largest number of break-ins and attempted break-ins occurred overnight Thursday, Oct. 8, when four cars were damaged on the 300 block of S. Lombard alone.

Besides that block, cars were victimized on the 300 block of S. Taylor, 300 block of S. Harvey (2) and 200 block of S. Taylor. Burglaries also occurred on the 700 block of S. Scoville, 100 block of S. Grove, 200 block of S. Humphrey and 700 block of N. Grove. A criminal damage to vehicle was also reported on the 300 block of S. Ridgeland Oct. 9.

Police are once again reminding the public to not to leave any items in plain sight inside vehicles that might attract thieves, such as GPS units in the window or electronic chargers in the cigarette lighters.

They also advise that homeowners and landlords check all lights and motion sensors to make sure they are in working order.


Gunmen rob two Chicago Ave. stores

Oak Park police are investigating the armed robbery of two Chicago Avenue businesses over a 72 hour period last week by a pair of young men.

On the night of Oct. 7, two men described as black, in their early 20s and wearing bandanas over their faces entered the 7-11 store, 240 Chicago, pointed hand guns at the clerk and demanded cash. One of the thieves then struck the clerk on the head with a gun and took $300 from the cash register.

On the afternoon of Oct. 10, two men matching the above description entered a dry cleaner on the first block of Chicago. As one displayed a handgun and demanded money, the other man jumped the counter, took a key from the clerk, opened the cash register and took $700. They then ran out the rear entrance to an alley and entered a waiting car.

Robbery

An Oak Park boy was jumped by four to six other boys while in the north end of Scoville Park the afternoon of Oct. 11. He was struck in the head, knocked to the ground, and stood on by one of his assailants as another thief stole $11, an iPod and a cell phone.

Residential burglary

The front doors of two apartments on the 700 block of Garfield were forced open and the units burglarized Oct. 7. In one, a $300 television was stolen. Electronics and jewelry valued at $1,950 were stolen from the other apartment.

Garage burglary

An unlocked garage on the 300 block of Linden was entered overnight Oct. 5 and the side window of a car broken and spare change stolen.

An unlocked garage on the 100 block of S. Taylor was entered overnight Oct. 4 and the side window of a car broken and spare change and a CD player stolen.

The side door of a garage on the 500 block of N. Lombard was forced open overnight Oct. 4 and a lawn mower and gas can stolen.

Outside warrant

Gerald Viola, 49, of 3037 Morton, Brookfield, was stopped on the 200 block of N. Austin the afternoon of Oct. 5 for an alleged traffic violation. A name check turned up two warrants from the Cook County sheriff for obstruction of a court aide and violation of his conditional discharge.

Michael R. Weimer, 27, of Norridge, was stopped on suspicion on the 1100 block of North Blvd. the afternoon of Oct. 6. A name check determined he was wanted by the Cook County Sheriff on a probation violation.

John L. Guy, 27, was stopped on the 5700 block of Madison the morning of Oct. 7. He was wanted on an arrest warrant from the McHenry County sheriff.

Aggravated assault

Rosalyn A. Hall, 29, of 709 S. Scoville, was charged with aggravated assault the night of Oct. 5 after she allegedly threatened to kill an Oak Park boy with a knife while standing over him holding a knife. She was also charged with battery to a police officer for allegedly elbowing him.

One of two Chicago boys pointed what appeared to be a black semi automatic handgun at two Oak Park boys at the Stevenson Recreation Center, 49 Lake the evening of Oct. 11.  The assailants ran east bound on Lake, but were caught and arrested on the 5800 block of Corcoran Place in Chicago. Police say they found a black paintball gun in nearby bushes.

Battery

Willie L. Bonds, 53, of 13 N. Mayfield, was arrested the evening of Oct. 8 after he allegedly struck a woman on her head with his walking cane on the first block of Madison.

James E. Wilson, 30, of Chicago, was arrested by Oak Park police the afternoon of Oct. 9 as he was released from the Stateville Penitentiary, and held on a domestic battery warrant.

DUI, etc.

Marisela Rosas, 30, of Berwyn, was stopped on the 6100 block of Roosevelt around 4 a.m. Oct. 7 by police seeking a hit and run driver. Rosas was arrested after police determined she was the driver who allegedly left the scene of an accident on the 900 block of S. Austin. She was also charged with DUI, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and having an expired registration.

Unlawful possession of a handgun

Police responding to a domestic disturbance call on the 1000 block of Scoville around 3:45 a.m. Oct. 10 arrested David W. Kotalik, 60, after a second person in the house told them he had a handgun in his possession, which is illegal under village ordinance.

Theft

Ronald Williams, 43, of Chicago was allegedly observed placing multiple items into a bag while inside the CVS Pharmacy, 345 Madison, the night of Oct. 10. He ran out of the store, but was caught and arrested on the same block. He was charged with felony retail theft.

Jerry A. Negron, 20, was arrested the morning of Oct. 9 after video surveillance reportedly showed him taking money from a cash register at the Jiffy Lube, 6845 North Ave., on Sept. 30.

Demingo Swift, 26, of 5822 W. Superior, was the driver of a car stopped on the 700 block of N. Austin the afternoon of Oct. 9 for having plates reported stolen out of Maywood. He was also allegedly driving on a revoked license.

Drugs

Adam Kulik, 19, of 676 Juniper Lane, Bartlett, was stopped on suspicion the evening of Oct. 4 on the 6400 block of Roosevelt. He was allegedly found in possession of three baggies of heroin.

Stephen K. Bolf, 26, of 879 Fieldstone, Aurora, was stopped on suspicion at the corner of Harrison and Austin the evening of Oct. 7. Police say he was in possession of a controlled substance.

Devin Daniels, 31, of 1227 N. Mason, was stopped on suspicion near his home the afternoon of Oct. 7 and was allegedly found in possession of a controlled substance.

These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Oak Park and River Forest police departments from Oct. 5-12. Not all incidents that occurred are listed. Anyone named in reports has only been charged with a crime and cases have not yet been adjudicated.
