A resident of the 200 block of North Austin was entering his apartment vestibule around 2:30 p.m. on June 21, when a man followed, spun him around and forced him into a corner. Holding a box cutter to the man's neck, the robber said, "Give me your money."
When the man turned over his cell phone and $5 cash, the thief told him to go to his residence and get more cash. Told he was broke, the thief told his victim to "get moving" up to his apartment, while he turned and fled.
Just after 5 p.m. that same afternoon, a woman getting out of her car in her garage on the 1150 block of S. Lyman was confronted by a man who pointed a silver hand gun at her and said "Give me the money." The thief fled after the woman handed over her wallet, containing $70 cash.
Residential, business burglary
Overnight June 17, a residence on the 1150 block of S. Oak Park was entered through the unlocked bathroom window and ransacked. A laptop computer, 32-inch TV and electronic game console were stolen. The items were valued at $2,200.
Between June 12-16 the street level window of a residence on the 500 block of Harrison was forced open and a computer was damaged but left behind in a burglary attempt. Total damage was $1,380.
A residence on the 900 block of N. Austin was entered by unknown means during the day June 15, and $880 in electronic games stolen.
During the day June 17 thieves forced open the front door of a residence on the 300 block of S. Oak Park, ransacked the place and stole electronics and jewelry valued at $455.
A residence on the first block of Garfield was entered through an unlocked rear bedroom window the afternoon of June 19. A computer monitor and keyboard valued at $700 was stolen.
A burglar entered a home on the 300 block of S. Lombard the evening of June 17, but was apparently scared away by the family dog.
Between June 13-19 $1,470 in electronics and jewelry was stolen from a home on the 100 block of S. Humphrey.
The front cover board of a concession stand at Rehm Pool, 515 Garfield, was broken and an electric time clock, touch screen computer and 5-gallon container of ice cream, valued in total at $840, were stolen overnight June 15.
Overnight June 17, Pumpkin Moon, 1028 North Blvd., was entered through an unlocked front door and $252 in store merchandise stolen.
Overnight June 17, a brick was thrown through the window of a boutique on the first block of Lake and numerous items valued at $1,255 were stolen from the display case.
Burglary vehicle, garage
There were at least nine garage burglaries in Oak Park last week. John Robinson, 42, of 5525 W. Congress Parkway, Chicago was allegedly observed by police exiting a garage on the 600 block of S. Harvey the afternoon of June 19 with a box containing a television antenna.
Other break ins occurred on the 1100 block of Hayes, 1000 and 1100 blocks of N. Lombard, 800 block of N. Ridgeland, 100 block of LeMoyne, and 100 and 1000 blocks of N. Taylor.
There were at least 10 vehicle burglaries last week. The evening of June 21, the side window of a 2008 Lincoln Navigator was smashed and an iPod stolen from the center console cupholder.
Thieves pulled the door lock on a work truck on the 300 block of N. Humphrey during the day June 16 and stole $5,200 worth of tools.
A purse, wallet and cell phone were stolen from an unlocked car on the 1100 block of S. Grove overnight June 16.
Other burglaries in Oak Park, most all involving breaking a side window and stealing visible valuables, occurred on the 900 block of N. Taylor, 1000 block of N. Lombard, 1000 block of Hayes, 100 and 1100 block of N. Humphrey and 400 block of S. Austin.
The night of June 16, in River Forest, a wallet was stolen from an unlocked car on the 600 block of Jackson and a cell phone, gold bracelet and $25 cash stolen from a car on the 700 block of Monroe.
DUI
Cecil Higgs, 52, of Lawrence, MI, was arrested on the 100 block of S. Harlem the morning of June 21 and charged with DUI and other violations after he allegedly fled the scene of three traffic accidents on the 1100 block of Bonnie Brae. Police say Higg's pick up truck severely damaged three vehicles.
Around 2:30 a.m. May 20, Kenneth D. Dean, 30, of Chicago was allegedly found by River Forest police slumped in his car on Madison near Lathrop, his foot on the brake and the car in gear. He reportedly also had a suspended license.
Reckless driving
Gregory E. Mammel, 22, of Des Plaines was arrested around 7 a.m. June 16 and charged with aggravated speeding and reckless driving after police allegedly observed him drag racing near Augusta and Thatcher in his Jeep Grand Cherokee. A search of his car reportedly turned up 11 hypodermic needles, a crack pipe, and a "soft pellet" air hand gun.
Battery
Darryl Lee Lovett, 21, of 3312 W. Foster, Chicago, was arrested the night of June 16 on a signed complaint alleging domestic battery on March 8 on the 1100 block of N. Austin.
Theft
A thief entered the hospital room of a patient undergoing surgery at West Suburban Hospital between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. June 11 and stole a cell phone, $950 in cash and personal identification and credit cards.
Veronica D. Turner, 22, of Milwaukee, WI, and Kierra D. Hillard, 20, of 5502 W. Flournoy, Chicago, were reportedly involved in a car crash on the 5600 block of Washington the evening of June 17. Police say $79.94 worth of alcohol stolen from the Dominick's Store, 259 Lake, was found in their car.
Abner Rolon, 35, of Cicero, was stopped on the 1100 block of S. Wesley the afternoon of June 17. Police say he set off the alarm as he exited the CVS Pharmacy, 6748 Roosevelt. Items he'd allegedly stolen were found nearby, and he was identified as the thief by store personnel.
A woman had her purse stolen while inside a laundromat on the first block of Chicago Avenue the afternoon of June 19.
Bikes were stolen on the 1100 block of South Blvd., 300 block of S. Maple, 800 block of Clinton, 300 block of S. Kenilworth, and from garage on the 600 block of Gunderson, 500 block of Lyman and two on the 1150 block of S. Lyman in Oak Park, and on the 700 block of Williams in River Forest.
Outside warrant
Patrick A. Thompkins, 40, of Maywood, was stopped for an alleged traffic violation on the 100 block of Washington the morning of June 21. A name check found his license was suspended, and he was wanted on an arrest warrant for parole violation.
