Shocks of color and sound were beyond the usual this afternoon even for all the customary whimsy of Oak Park's Arts District.
A wandering bagpipe player from Carol Stream landed on the stoop of Eastgate Café to check in on his childhood pal, Eastgate owner Patrick Dailey.
While Dailey was pouring green ale and his wife, Olya, was serving up Serbian cabbage, Denny O'Carlos entertained diners soaking in the sunshine and 75 degrees. O'Carlos is with Tunes of Glory, a Warrenville-based pipes and drums band that plays the western suburbs.
He grew up with Dailey in Manhattan (Illinois, that is). Tunes of Glory's last venture east was the South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday.
